Microsoft Excel goes 3D?

Yes, its true, Microsoft is giving Excel users a new way to explore data: GeoFlow. The technology, which sprang from a stargazing project at Microsoft Research, is capable of generating animated 3D visualizations on a globe or map powered by Bing Maps.

It might not be stereoscopic yet... but it will be!

GeoFlow allows data analysts to embark on eye-catching flyovers and flythroughs, where data points can sprout out from the landscape like skyscrapers. Not only does it provide a flashy alternative to 2D charts and graphs, GeoFlow can help users gain valuable new perspectives on business data says Microsoft

Microsoft's GeoFlow Preview is available now as a free download and requires Excel 2013

World 3D Film Expo - Rare Showings

The World 3D Film Expo will be holding its third festival of vintage 1950s three-dimensional movies at the Egyptian Theatre  in Hollywood on September 6th through the 15th. Among the programs being screened is a 3D Animation Show on Sunday September 8th at 11am.

See dual-35mm prints of all the 3D cartoons produced back in the golden age of animation: Boo Moon with Casper, Popeye The Ace of Space, Disney's Melody, Donald Duck in Working For Peanuts, Woody Woodpecker in Hypnotic Hick, Bugs Bunny in Chuck Jones' Lumber Jack Rabbit.
The program will also include RKO's stop motion Motor Rhythm (originally produced for the 1939 NY World's Fair), the oddball stop-mo Adventures of Sam Space, Norman McLaren's Now is the Time, plus a few unannounced surprises. One of the surprises last time was a screening of the uber-rare Walt Disney's 3D Jamboree, a rare color Mouseketeers film originally made for showing in Disneyland. I hear they may show this again.

Glasses-Free 3D iPhone for $33??

Well.. you knew it wouldn't actually be a 3D phone right? Here we go, breaking down the multi 45 degree angle semitransparent mirrors and single opaque mirror at the back over an iphone (iphone 4 or 5) with content made to be spread across each surface to create a multi-layer miniature theatre experience.

Pied Piper or Palm Top Theatre is a prime example of a brilliant way to get people thinking and experiencing 3D. If it is a huge success then I am wrong in saying that it is going to be a flop. This is not the first time angular mirrors have been used to give a convincing 3D experience nor is it going to be the last.. Perhaps a good model for a multi projector 3D movie theatre.

It is good to see 3D portrayed in a better light, it has been almost 2 years since mashable has given any love it seems!

Interview with SKY3D (John Cassy)

Wikipedia says
"Sky 3D
is a 3D television channel on the Sky platform, that launched on 3 April 2010 with the Manchester United vs Chelseafootball match being broadcast in over a thousand pubs across the UK and Ireland in 3D.[1] On 1 October 2010, Sky 3D became available to residential subscribers.[2][3] The channel broadcasts a mixture of movies, entertainment and sport for 16 hours a day from 09:00 to 01:00 GMT.[4][5]
To promote its 3D channel, Sky broadcast a documentary programme titled Flying Monsters 3D presented by prominent naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough on Christmas Day 2010.[6] Sky has also agreed deals with Walt Disney Pictures20th Century FoxUniversal PicturesWarner Bros.Paramount andDreamWorks to showcase all of the studios' new 3D films, including the 3D world premiere of Avatar.[2][7] Sky also filmed a Bollywood dance routine at St Pancras railway station in 3D as part of a partnership between Sky Arts and the English National Ballet.[2] Sky is also working with Nintendo to provide shortform content from Sky 3D to the Nintendo 3DS.[8] In April 2011, Sky announced that Kylie Minogue's Aphrodite World Tour would be shown on Sky 3D in June 2011.
Sky 3D has also been used by other broadcasters such as A+E NetworksDiscovery CommunicationsESPN Inc.and MTV Networks to broadcast their own 3D programming.[9][10][11] During the 2012 Summer Olympics, Sky 3D provided coverage from Eurosport, with the channel temporarily made available to all of Sky's HD pack subscribers for the duration of the games."

During a recent interview John Cassy the head of Sky3D and techradar John was asked..

And have you actually seen a glasses free 3D television that impresses you?
Cassy: I have, but it's under NDA so I can't talk about it! For my mind, high quality glasses-free TV at a price that the average house can afford is a matter of when and not if. It's going to happen, it's just a question of when and the technology we see - we have as much of this as we can - is definitely coming along. It's a bit of a way off but it's coming along.

What could he have seen? Hmm..
  • Stream TV's 4k glasses-free 3D TV
  • Dimenco's 4k glasses-free 3D TV
  • NEO3DO glasses free 3D Android tablet
  • Some Dolby 3D Display?

Nintendo SLAMMED in court for 3D patent infringement

Last month former Sony inventor Seijiro Tomita sued Nintendo for infringing on his patent for a glasses-free 3D display. Today, Rueters reported that a federal jury in New York found Nintendo guilty.
Defense attorney Scott Lindvall maintained that Nintendo's 3DS didn't use key aspects of Tomita's patent and that Tomita was only one of several vendors selling 3D technology that Nintendo met with in 2003.Initially Tomita requested that Nintendo pay $9.80 for every 3DS sold however he settled for $30.2 million, instead of the over 200 million he wanted.
The jury didn't buy it.
"We are thankful to the jurors for their diligence and hard work," Tomita's attorney, Joe Diamante concluded. "It has been a honor to represent Mr. Tomita and to protect his invention."
As 3D grows I think we will see many more instances of successful products infringing upon patents.
